Royal Danish by Stanwell Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates [SOLD OUT]

Description

Royal Danish was a sub-brand of Denmark’s Stanwell company. Using the same shapes as the main Stanwell line, Royal Danish is now a great way for customers to get their hands on iconic Danish pipes that are no longer manufactured by Stanwell or by any of its sub-brands. What’s more, Stanwell sub-brands were of a much higher quality than the average second-line pipe, meaning they’re excellent value for money.

This particular Royal Danish is a shape 140, designed by the legendary Jess Chonowitsch. As a testament to its popularity, it’s one of the few shapes Stanwell still produces to this day. An elegant, Danish take on the traditional Dublin, this design mixes a moderately plump and wide bowl with a quarter-bend whose lines flow as smoothly as a river. The grain is quite lovely – far superior to a traditional sub-line – with some nice flame grain and bird’s-eyes on the bowl, along with a fairly light brown stain that allows the briar’s patterns to shine. The stem is vulcanite, which Stanwell does not use anymore (to the chagrin of some), which we’ve polished back to its original jet black sheen. A fairly lightweight pipe, this one should be comfortable to clench for most, but the bowl also fits snugly in the hand for those that prefer otherwise.

There’s a hair of inner rim darkening and a little wear to the pipe’s finish, but nothing that one needs to worry about.
