Description
As with so many of today’s premier Italian workshop makes, the story of Rinaldo begins at Mastro de Paja. The latter was a workshop founded by Giancarlo Guidi (later of Ser Jacopo) and Giannino Spadoni (later of Fiamma di Re), which the brothers Elio and Guido Rinaldo worked for as teenagers in the 1970s. At the end of the 1980s, the two departed Mastro de Paja to found their own make under their surname. Thus, Rinaldo was born.
I should know better by now, but I’ll admit I’m always surprised – not to mention impressed – that makes with such close “family trees” as the Italian workshops are nonetheless all very different in the styles they pursue. The Lithos is Rinaldo’s partially rusticated series, however Rinaldo’s rustication wears a two-tone dark-grey (rough sections) and scarlet (smooth) stain. This Lithos is paired with a more typically Italian lucite stem (though still with more color to it than most). As for the rest of the nomenclature, “Y” is Rinaldo’s grading system, running from “Y” to “YYYY” on rusticated pipes, while “Titania” is, as the word implies, for larger than average pipes. This one is indeed quite big, but still a reasonable enough size for the average smoker to enjoy.
This Rinaldo is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Rinaldo workshop. It also comes with its original box and sleeve.
