Description

The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.

It is an ancient Celtic tradition to celebrate the beginning of summer with a peculiar ritual: the putting out of all fires and the lighting of a single, ceremonial bonfire. This tradition and ritual are known as Bealtaine, or colloquially as Beltane, with the bonfire itself often referred to as the Beltane Fire. As with many of their lines, Rattray’s Beltane’s Fire pays tribute to its Celtic roots in both name and design. The basic shape is a classic bullmoose Rhodesian, but it also comes with three stems in three colors: black, symbolizing the night of the Beltane Fire; red, symbolizing the fire itself; and yellow, symbolizing the sun as it rises the next morning, and the new season with it.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, and comes with its original box, sleeve, and three stems. The pipe is chambered to accommodate 9mm filters, whether charcoal, meerschaum, or balsa, or indeed an adapter if non-filtered use is preferred.
