Rad Davis, Smooth Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Robert ‘Rad’ Davis is an American pipe-maker from Foley, Alabama. A life-long pipe smoker, Davis was introduced to making pipes by Mark Tinsky, and has since become one of North America’s most respected carvers, with a devoted following. Along the way, Davis has been able to tutor other American pipe-makers who have gone on to become highly respected in their own right, such as Ryan Alden and Scottie Piersel. Sadly, Davis retired in 2015, meaning his pipes are now hard to come by – especially since those lucky enough to already own one are unlikely to part with them willingly.
This bent apple is a great example of Davis’ work and style. Davis’ Danish influence is recognizable in its plump bowl, thick shank and flowing lines, which render it quite distinct from its English or French counterparts. The pipe shows off some beautiful flame grain around its bowl, emphasized and accentuated by its light brown stain. The pipe is extremely comfortable to hold, and its stem work – something Davis was particularly renowned for – is perfectly executed. What’s more, this pipe is immaculately preserved, as its previous owner clearly took great care of it.
