Description
Andrew Petersen is an American artisan who originally worked under the Quad City Pipes moniker. Being of Danish-American heritage, it would seem that pipe making was a rather natural occupation for Petersen to take up, which he did first in 2007. Peterson would later spend time with Moscow-born master Alex Florov, who no doubt helped Petersen’s talents to fully flourish.
When this pipe landed on my desk, I knew it reminded me of something, but I couldn’t quite think what. Then, like a bolt of lightning, it hit me. This is Petersen paying homage to one of the all-time great—albeit slightly less known—Danish pipe makers and a pioneer in the craft, Jorn Micke. Micke was an early apprentice of Sixten Ivarsson, though soon enough the two were more or less peers, with Micke developing a style that continues to serve as inspiration for artisans all over the world today. If you’ve ever encountered one of Tsuge’s Kaga models, for example, you’ve encountered Micke’s legacy. And this wonderfully plump little specimen is also very much a Micke. I say “a Micke” because such shapes are very difficult to describe, especially in conventional pipe making language. But, to borrow from an old line about something completely different, you know it when you see it.
The condition is great. Some very minor, inner rim darkening, but nothing major at all.
