Since at least 1948, renowned artisans in the high-grade scene have lent designs to pipe factories and workshops so that they may be produced on a larger scale—and at a more affordable price point. Danish companies such as Stanwell, Pibe Dan, and WO Larsen, through their partnerships with figures such as Sixten Ivarsson, Tom Eltang, Sven Knudsen, and Gert Holbek, are notable pioneers in this regard, but this trend continues today not only in Denmark, but also America (e.g., Briarworks), France (e.g., Chacom), Japan (e.g., Tsuge), and elsewhere. As for Italy, one need look no further than the Proxima series. Crafted in the workshop of the Croci family, in Lombardy, Proxima is the second series of pipes designed by Piero Vitale, following his wildly successful Bluebird series. Each of these pipes began as blueprints and prototypes made by Vitale, before being carefully reproduced in limited batches at the Pipa Croci premises. As such, each reflects Vitale’s inimitable style, while being a little gentler on one’s wallet.
