Description
Preston Rogers is an American artisan based in Lexington, Kentucky. As keen pipe smoker (with an insatiable appetite for Latakia blends) Rogers was fascinated with modern, handmade pipes but, like so many of us in the community, found that his budget would not allow him to purchase as many of these pipes as he would have liked. Rogers’ solution – as is also a common occurrence in pipe-making – was to explore crafting his own pipes. Along the way Rogers has been heavily influenced by fellow American artisan Jeff “J. Alan” Gracik, but has also been inspired by the pipes of the great Danish makes and makers, such as Stanwell, Nording, Bari, and Anne Julie.
After meeting Preston at the NASPC show in Ohio this year, I was very happy to meet him, and even happier that he agreed to let MBSD stock his pipes. With this one, I could see the clear influence J. Alan had exerted on Preston’s work. It is, after all, a Danish (or, perhaps, Danish-American) billiard, a shape that has traveled from Danish icons such as Karl Erik and Jess Chonowitsch, through American icons, such as Todd Johnson and the aforementioned J. Alan, to contemporary carvers such as Rogers. Rogers has added his own twist on the shape by incorporating partial rustication techniques found in other Danish makes, such as Bari and WO Larsen, with the overall design completed by an ivorite ring and a stem made from hand cut ebonite.
