Pre-1997 Peterson Tankard Smooth Estate Briar, Pipe Unsmoked

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s “Tankard” shape debuted in the mid-1940s, and has been a recurrent addition to Peterson’s catalog in the decades since. This Tankard, however, is not the one that Peterson currently sells. The current iteration has a much straighter and wider stem, and is furthermore joined to the shank with a flush fit, rather than the army mount style featured here. So, what is this Peterson? Thankfully, Mark Irwin’s historical work over at Peterson Pipe Notes points to this particular Pete being an older iteration of the Tankard, with the exact year that the design change happened being 1997. This would make sense, as the original box that this Tankard comes with is decidedly not the one that Peterson uses for its pipes today.

This Tankard is also completely unsmoked, which is a nice surprise given its age. As stated, it also comes with its original box and sleeve.
