Description

Pipe Tristan is the name used by French artisan Tristan Lefebvre. Lefebvre is part of a new wave of hand made pipe carvers from the birthplace of briar, following in the footsteps of figures such as Alain Albuisson, Paul Lanier, and Pierre Morel Sr and Jr. Lefebvre credits a wide range of influences upon his pipe-making, such as modern greats from Italy and Denmark, such as Carlo Scotti’s Castello and Tom Eltang, as well as more unique sources of inspiration, such as the centuries-old hunting pipes native to Germany’s southern Bavarian region. As such, Tristan is equally at home crafting his own spin on the ’55,’ the hawbill, or the Danish Dublin as he is reviving the Ulmer Kloben – when he isn’t inventing his own shapes, that is.

If you’ve been following Tristan’s work, you’ll have noticed that he’s been devoting a significant portion of his energies to contemporary renditions of the bulldog and Rhodesian shapes. With some of these designs, the inspiration has been quite clear—such as in his re-imaginings of the Dunhill O shape, or the Bo Nordh “BoDog”—while in others, it’s been far more subtle. I’d say this one falls into the latter camp. I think I see a little of Tom Eltang’s influence in this one’s squat, wide, and long physique, but the Danes have shown an especial proclivity toward such shapes since before even Eltang’s time. More than anything, however, I see Tristan forging his own path with this design, from its mixed, near-naked finish, to its Finnish Durat mount. Its a distinctive combination of elements, but all comes together very nicely. Then again, at this point I expected nothing less.
