Description

Pipe Tristan is the name used by French artisan Tristan Lefebvre. Lefebvre is part of a new wave of up-and-coming hand made pipe carvers from the birthplace of briar, following in the footsteps of figures such as Alain Albuisson, Paul Lanier, and Pierre Morel Sr and Jr. Lefebvre credits a wide range of influences upon his pipe-making, such as modern greats from Italy and Denmark, such as Carlo Scotti’s Castello and Tom Eltang, as well as more unique sources of inspiration, such as the centuries-old hunting pipes native to Germany’s southern Bavarian region. As such, Tristan is equally at home crafting his own spin on the ’55,’ the hawbill, or the Danish Dublin as he is reviving the Ulmer Kloben – when he isn’t inventing his own shapes, that is.

After many years developing a portfolio that was heavily indebted to Italian and Danish influences, Tristan Lefebvre has recently devoted a significant portion of his efforts to more traditional designs. In particular, Tristan has looked to early to mid-20th century shapes to re-interpret in his own, unique ways. This could be seen in his recent takes on the Dunhill LC bent billiard and O squat bulldog shapes, and is on full display here once more with a highly distinctive rendition of the bullmoose. I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen the bullmoose’s iconic stout Rhodesian figure dressed in this kind of granular, Italian-style rustication before, but it certainly works. Speaking of the finish, this Granite bulldog belongs to a batch of pipes made from especially good briar, hence Tristan’s decision to leave them with a very light, natural stain. Much like Castello’s Natural Vergin or Savinelli’s Punto Oro Corallo, this will allow the pipe to develop a warm patina over time, which will pair even more nicely with the pipe’s hand-cut cumberland stem.
