Description
Celius pipes were hand made in the workshop of Svend Axel Celius, one of the first generation of iconic carvers in the Danish style that emerged in the mid-20th century. Beginning his career under Poul Rasmussen and Sven Knudsen, Celius later started his own brand of pipes using his last name, while also occasionally carving pipes for Denmark’s famous pipe houses Pipe-Dan and W.Ø. Larsen.
This is a pretty special Celius pipe, because it’s not just a Celius pipe. It’s a pipe that Svend Axel Celius made for the legendary Danish pipe house, Pibe-Dan, otherwise known as Pipe-Dan, or simply Pipe Dan. Pibe-Dan was founded in 1943 by H. Dan Christensen and was at the cutting edge of 20th century Danish-style pipe design, with other contributors to its legacy including Sixten Ivarsson, Gert Holbek, Preben Holm, and Tom Eltang. As evinced from the nomenclaturr, this pipe happens to come from a key decade in the emergence of the Danish movement, the 1960s (1966, to be precise), making it quite the historic artefact, along with being a surefire excellent smoker.
As for the pipe itself, it’s a classic Celius shape, one that is, I dare say, even nicer in its composition and grain than ‘regular’ Celius pipes – though, if you know Celius, none of his pipes were exactly ‘regular.’
The condition is excellent. There is perhaps a little finish fading, but nothing that particularly stands out.
