Peterson Straight Grain 220S Smooth Bent Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
There are a number of things about this pipe that sharply distance it from your average Peterson, some obvious, and some a little more subtle. Let’s start with the obvious: it is a Peterson from the Straight Grain series, which should not be confused with the Flame Grain series. The difference being that, while you can order a Flame Grain from Peterson or from a vendor (like MBSD) who imports Peterson pipes, you cannot simply order a Straight Grain. Very few Straight Grain grade Petersons are made each year as the requirements for a stummel to qualify for the grade are simply extremely high. As the only contemporary examples of Straight Grain grade Petersons I’ve seen have been silver or gold mounted, and judging by this one’s (original) box, this is not a recent Straight Grain either. It must be at least several decades old, which makes the fact that it’s unsmoked even more impressive. In fact, the only other Straight Grain I’ve seen like this one was from around 1970. The final interesting thing about this Peterson is its shape. It’s a 220S, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before. I’ve seen the 220 shape, along with the X220, but never a 220S. Very curious, and a real gem for Peterson collectors, I’ll bet.
As stated, the pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original box and sock. There are a couple of very small dings on the bowl, but I mean very (<1mm) small.
