Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

I’m a big fan of Peterson’s annual Pipe of the Year series, and my favorite versions of these pipes are the ones that end up inaugurating wholly new shapes for Peterson’s catalog. The 2007 POY, from back when the POY pipes were simply stamped “Limited Edition,” is a prime example. Ultimately becoming the B27, it is an eight-sided panel billiard, but whose equilateral proportions and overall design lean closer to early-20th century pipes—such as Peterson’s own, but more generally in Europe as a whole. The design also features a sterling silver faux spigot, engraved with fittingly Celtic patterns, and an ebonite fishtail stem. As with other Peterson Pipes of the Year, and as the stamping indicates, the 2007 was a strictly limited edition piece (with even the B27 bowl shape remaining a highly irregular presence in Peterson’s output), with only 1000 of these pipes produced.

The condition is fair. The pipe has been professionally refurbished by Briarville, but there’s still some darkening and finish fading on the rim, the chamber has been over-reamed, and there are a few handling marks on the bowl.
