Peterson Nickel Mounted Barrel Rusticated Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates
Out of stock
Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
The “Barrel” is a little different from your average Peterson model. For one thing, it’s not exactly a standard shape, i.e., a numbered shape in Peterson’s catalog. Rather, it is one of the “Specialty” shapes, along with the Belgique, the Calabash, and the Tankard. These shapes originally debuted in 1945 and are generally more slender and lightweight than their numbered siblings. They have also gone through various iterations, with finishes and even the shapes themselves changing during different periods in Peterson’s history. This would look to be an older model than is currently sold, judging by the finish, which is not the current Peterson house rustication style, and the nomenclature. I would estimate this to instead be from what Mark Irwin calls the Dublin Era, between 1991 and 2018.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and minor finish fading.
