Peterson Irish Made Army 107 Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson’s Irish Made Army is the make’s signature series of army mount pipes, i.e., pipes with a nickel mount on the shank, providing extra durability to the mortise and allowing the stem to be removed (such as for a quick clean) while the bowl is still warm. This looks to me to be an older example of the IMA, as contemporary renditions use a darker stain, more like Peterson’s Heritage finish, while this one has more of a light brown hue. The contemporary version also uses a simple tapered stem, rather than a flared one like this one has.
The condition is good. The rim has a few scratches and minor finish fading, and there’s a few handling marks on the bowl.
