Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
One of the great things about Peterson pipes is that, at least for the high-end pipes, you can generally mix-and-match which distinctions you’d like to have for your pipe. Peterson’s Silver Spigot pipes feature the make’s renowned silverwork, in the form of beautiful sterling silver spigot mounts. Silver Cap pipes take this renowned silverwork and apply it in the form of sterling caps that also function as rim guards. And Flame Grain pipes feature bowls with some of the best briar Peterson has to offer, in the form of consistent, vertical striations around the stummel. If you’re looking for something really special, though, you can opt for a pipe that has all three: a sterling silver spigot mount, a sterling silver cap, and flame grain briar. That’s exactly what this one is, hence the somewhat absurdly long title I’ve had to fit in for it.
The condition is great. The pipe has not been smoked much at all. The only thing I note is a small, superficial nick in the briar on the left side of the bowl. See the last photo, just below the light halo. The pipe also comes with its original box and sleeve.
