Peterson Deluxe System Dark Smooth 2s Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s System pipes can be roughly divided into three categories: there’s the System Standard, which features the titular reservoir system at the base of the shank to mitigate moisture build-up and gurgling; then there’s the Premier, which takes the System Standard designs and switches the latter’s nickel army mount for silver, while also using higher-grade briar; finally, there’s the Deluxe System which includes the same reservoir system as the Standard and Premier, but with upgrades over either, as well as some distinct design changes. Like the Premier, the Deluxe features a sterling silver army mount, but on the latter, this mount is flattened at the shank end, with a noticeable gap between the shank end and the base of the stem. Why this gap? Originally, because that’s where an outdoorsman, smoking his trusty Pete, could tie a string or a chain so that the pipe could hang from his neck when not immediately in use (though these days, the gap has become a nice, recognizable aesthetic element in its own right). The Deluxe also features a metal condenser at the end of the tenon, which works in conjunction with the Peterson System to create an even cooler, dryer, smoke. The Deluxe series also uses superior briar to both the Standard and Premier System, which is quite evident from the flame grain on this one.

The condition is excellent. Does not appear to have been smoked much at all, to my eyes. The pipe comes with its original box and sleeve.
