Peterson D7 Danish Market 2001 Pipe of the Year, Briar Pipe, Irish Estates [SOLD OUT]

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

I must admit I was a little confused when this pipe came across my bench. It is one of the brand’s seldom used Danish-inspired ‘D’ shapes, with sterling silver band marked with the number ‘2001.’ This suggested to me that it was a Pipe of the Year, but I know Peterson Pipes of the Year and this isn’t the one I remember. So, I had to do a fair bit of research to find out what exactly this one was. As it turns out, it is indeed a Pipe of the Year, but one made specifically for a Danish tobacconist, using one of Peterson’s Danish-inspired shapes. As such, it is a real rarity and should appeal to collectors, along with anyone that enjoys a good smoking pipe.

The pipe looks to be in Peterson’s natural finish, which shows off plenty of nice bird’s-eye grain on the stummel. The shape is indeed very Danish, being a slightly bent brandy of sorts. It’s also in great condition, having only some very minor handling marks to speak of when it comes to wear.
