Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Debuting in 1965, and taking its name from a collection of small islands off the coast of County Galway, the Aran has been a staple in Peterson production for decades. This particular Aran is also from the nickel-mounted sub-series, wearing a silvery collar that lends an extra touch of elegance to the design. Judging by the light brown stain, along with the nomenclature, I would think this to be a slightly older Peterson, from what Mark Irwin tends to call the “Dublin era” (1991-2018), prior to the Laudisi acquisition. It’s a lovely looking pipe, but then again, I’ve always had a soft spot for Canadians.

The condition is good. Some wear to the rim, including a couple of spots of charring on the top of the inner lip, and a small, superficial scratch on the right side of the bowl.
