Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Like the other Nickel Mounted Arans listed recently, the light brown stain, along with the nomenclature, leads me to believe this to be a slightly older Peterson, back from what Mark Irwin tends to call the “Dublin era” (1991-2018), and which was prior to the Laudisi acquisition (as a side note, the person who traded these in seemed to really love his Arans). I’ve nothing against Laudisi-era Petersons, especially since they’ve put out some of the best Christmas Pipe and Pipe of the Year models in a very long time, but these older Arans really are beautiful pipes—especially considering that they are, ostensibly, part of Peterson’s more affordable lines. This one is rendered in one of my personal favorite Peterson shapes, the 150 bulldog, with its stout bowl lit up by flame grain, further accentuated by the pipe’s nickel collar and black vulcanite stem.

The condition is good. Some darkening and general wear to the rim, and very slight finish fading.
