Peterson Antique Collection 1904 Smooth Anse Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
In 1995, Peterson released a special, limited edition set of pipes whose designs dated back to the make’s earliest years. This first iteration of the “Antique Collection” was comprised of four shapes, each being traceable to one debuted by Peterson between 1903 and 1910. In 2005, Peterson released a second Antique Collection, this time featuring just two shapes; one based on a 1904 design, and the other on a 1908 design. This particular Peterson is the former, which I’ve heard described as a Devil Anse, a Belge, and a cutty—though, as Peterson historian Mark Irwin notes, its original name, in early 20th century Peterson catalogs, was the “Large Jap.” Whatever you choose to call it, it’s a pleasant looking design, and a rare Pete to boot.
The condition is very good. Some darkening and wear to the rim, minor handling marks.
