Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
For a short while around the 1970s, Peterson partnered with British company Laxey Pipes to produce Peterson-brand, African meerschaum pipes, many of which were rendered in Peterson’s own classic shapes. This one, for example, is a rendition of Peterson’s “312” System army mount bent billiard, dressed in a rusticated, fumed finish typical of African meerschaum pipes. As very few of these Peterson meerschaum pipes were made (in part due to the closure of meerschaum mines in Tanzania in the later 20th century), they are among the most collectible Peterson pipes around.
This one is even rarer than other African meerschaum Petersons, as it is completely unsmoked, and even comes with its original box, sleeve, and papers.
