Peterson 2022 Pipe of the Year 14B 429/925 Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

In our recent listings for the 2024 Pipe of the Year, I was singing the praises of Giacomo Penzo and his work on designing Peterson’s annual, limited edition releases. What a coincidence it was, then, that this 2022 POY should land on my desk today, as is also an example of Penzo’s work. Well, it is not entirely Penzo’s making—instead, what he did for the 2022 POY was to revive a design dear to the heart of many a Peterson smoker. That design was the 19th century shape 14B. A System pipe—i.e., one incorporating Peterson’s internal moisture reservoir and P-lip—the 14B was designed by Charles Peterson himself and was a favorite smoker of Mark Twain. By 2022, the 14B, as well as its sister shape 308, had long been out of production, making this Pipe of the Year a very welcome return. The catch, however, was that, being a limited edition release, only 925 were made, across Peterson’s range of finishes. This is in Peterson’s Dark Smooth finish, with its warm, brown sugar stain accentuating some really nice flame grain and bird’s-eye patterns.

This pipe is completely unsmoked with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box and sleeve.
