Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson fans will likely recognize this shape, as featured in Peterson’s 2018 Pipe of the Year. Peterson superfans, however, will notice that it does not actually have a precedent in Peterson’s catalog at all. In other words, it was a completely new shape. But it does share similar properties with an older Peterson design, that being the Hansom from Peterson’s famed Sherlock Holmes series. Like the Hansom, the 2018 PotY has a tall, bulldog-like bowl, sterling silver collar, and swan neck curvature. This pipe, however, isn’t a bulldog, or even a Rhodesian, strictly speaking, as it has an oval shank. It is familiar, but different; a new spin on an old classic. This pipe was also limited to 500.

The condition is very good. There’s rim rim darkening and some slight finish fading on the top of the bowl, but the pipe has otherwise been well preserved.
