Peterson 1976 Supreme 2s Gold Mounted Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Debuting in 1953, the Supreme has since been the single rarest and most high-grade line produced by Peterson, making them particularly attractive to collectors. Fewer than 1% (around 0.05% to be precise) of briar stummels turned annually in Peterson’s factory meet the requirements to become a Supreme grade, and those that do are mounted with precious metals—either sterling silver or, for the most special pipes, 9 karat gold. These days, Gold Mounted Supremes typically feature gold shank collars, but occasionally a pipe will receive a much more generous spigot mount. In the past, however, Peterson also offered Gold Mounted Supremes in an army mount form, these essentially being a Deluxe System pipe whose signature silver mount had been swapped for a solid gold one. This is one of those pipes. It was made in 1976 though from looking at it, it might well have been made just yesterday (if they still made this model, that is). On a final note, while the Supreme grade was introduced in 1953, no Supremes were manufactured between around 2000 and 2019, making a Supreme of any variety even more scarce than might be first thought.

Despite its age, this Supreme is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
