Peter Hedegaard OP3 Smooth Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe

Description
Peter Hedegaard was an artisan from Denmark and one of the masters of post-war Danish pipe-making. Like so many of the Danish greats, Hedegaard honed his skills making pipes at Copenhagen’s WO Larsen workshop in the late 1970s, where he worked under its then-foreman, Hans “Former” Nielsen, and alongside other seminal figures, such as Poul Ilsted, Teddy Knudsen, and Tonni Nielsen. After WO Larsen, Hedegaard made pipes under his own name, achieving international renown for his talents and style. Hedegaard passed away in 2007 at the age of 55.
Like Preben Holm before him, Peter Hedegaard is an example of a Danish legend whose career was, tragically, far shorter than it should have been. But, at least – and also like Preben Holm – his pipes will live forever. This Rhodesian is a particularly stunning example of his prowess, and was something of a signature shape in his portfolio. It is stout and wide, to the point where the bowl section appears to closer to a mushroom than its traditional counterparts. It is also superbly grained, with straight grain rising from the bowl’s base before perfectly transitioning into bird’s-eye right at the beginnings of the rim – which then envelop it entirely. One particularly attractive feature of this Hedegaard is the inclusion of an exotic hardwood ferrule at the shank’s end, which to my eye looks like rosewood. The grade is OP3.
The condition is excellent. Some very minor, inner rim darkening, but overall very well looked after.
