Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.
As I mentioned with the Nording “house pipe” style pipes that we had come in recently, Erik Nording’s career is often defined by both by his pioneering of the “Danish fancy” freehand genre and by his creation of bold, modernist Scandinavian designs. But if we examine his portfolio over the decades a little more closely, we find a profound versatility to his approach. From billiards to horns, to minimalist pokers, to shapes that, as of yet, don’t have a name, he’s done it all. I’ve even seen a Nording rendition of the iconic Dunhill LC, come to think of it. This one, on the other hand, I hadn’t seen before at all, and had to go digging to find out what it might be (which wasn’t easy, as most of the listings I found dead links due to the pipes all being sold out). Turns out this pipe is from a relatively recent Nording line, the “Silver Classic,” intended to be, per Nording, “a tribute to the traditional elegant and well balanced smoking pipes designed in the early days of pipe smoking.” I’d say that’s true, but for me it also evokes the early days of post-war Danish pipe making, where pioneers such as Poul Rasmussen, Emil Chonowitsch, and Sven Knudsen were creating neo-traditional shapes with more subtle Scandinavian inflections than what came later. This one is a lovely hybrid, with a very distinctive grey-brown contrast stain and silver collar. So, yes, I’d call it classic, but still a very Danish classic.
This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original sleeve.
