Description

Originally a science teacher in California, Nathan Armentrout began making pipes in 2009 and has since emerged as one of North America’s most talented, high-grade artisan pipe-makers. Inspired by Denmark’s legendary carvers, Nathan’s designs continue the legacy of the Danish pipe-making movement into the present day and expand that legacy through his own unique interpretations of the masters of old.

The apple is one of the oldest shapes in the history of briar pipes. This apple, however, has a more modern precedent: the Ivarsson family. More specifically, this ‘Danish’ apple comes to us, originally, by way of Lars Ivarsson, and then by his daughter Nanna Ivarsson. But shapes do not really ‘belong’ to anyone, any more than ideas do. They pass through communities like winds moving through fields, with each individual blade of grass feeling and reacting to the breeze differently than the next. This pipe, by Nathan Armentrout, follows the Ivarssonian impetus of all but eliminating the classical inflection at which the bowl becomes the shank, and of extending the shank far beyond the relative length of other Danish shapes at the time, such as its eggs and volcanoes. This he combines with the more American inclination towards a perfectly ring grained, contrast sandblast finish, and towards keeping the end product light enough for an everyday carry.
