Description
Originally a science teacher in California, Nathan Armentrout began making pipes in 2009 and has since emerged as one of North America’s most talented, high-grade artisan pipe-makers. Inspired by Denmark’s legendary carvers, Nathan’s designs continue the legacy of the Danish pipe-making movement into the present day and expand that legacy through his own unique interpretations of the masters of old.
Nathan was supposed to attend the Las Vegas pipe show this year, but had to pull out at the last minute. He asked if MBSD would take some of his pipes to display in his place. We were more than happy to oblige, and the other attendees were impressed—as they always are—with his work. Never missing an opportunity, I also arranged to restock our own supply of Armentrout pipes at the same time. This one certainly caught my eye. It’s a nice, ring grain sandblast apple, with shaping reminiscent of Danes such as Former and Nanna Ivarsson. It also has a fossilized mammoth ivory accent, which is an easy way to my heart. But what really stood out for me on this one was the stem work. The mouthpiece is a very distinct cut, with a beading and recess near the base that almost looks like a post-war re-imagining of a Sasieni fantail. There’s an old saying in Danish pipe-making that the most important part of a pipe is the stem. Nathan, as should be expected, passes that one with flying colors.
