Description

Mutcat pipes are made by Mutcat Cat, an Indonesian artisan residing in its northeastern Java province. A pipe-maker for many years, and a pipe-smoker for even longer, Mutcat’s pipes are frequently innovative in their use of alternative, home-grown materials and elaborate forms and finishes. This is not only because of a desire to offer pipe-smokers something new and unique, but because of Mutcat’s own experiences as one. Living in a tropical climate, Mutcat seeks to find novel approaches to pipe construction that can provide a cool, dry smoke whatever the weather.

The bulldog is one shape that has undergone a drastic series of evolutions within modern pipe-making. And a focal point of of many of these transformations has been the relationship between the bowl and the shank. This Mutcat, for example, follows in the footsteps of certain European carvers, with the most famous being Denmark’s Tom Eltang, in compressing the bowl and situating the beginning of the shank higher up, and further along, the bowl than is tradition. This gives the pipe a decidedly “squat” look, but it also gives the impression that the bowl is riding on top of the shank (some carvers even call this a “surfing” bulldog) due to the lip that the transition from one to the other creates. While many of Mutcat’s pipes make use of hardwoods that are more conventional for smoking pipe carving in Asia, this particular pipe is simply made from tree heather root (briar) and cumberland resin.
