Moonlight Pipes Handmade Oom Paul Briar Pipe, New [SOLD OUT]

Description

While some pipe-makers take inspiration from the natural world, or from the technologies of present and past, few of them in the contemporary seek to represent these forms in their work. Czech artisan Ondrej Bárta of Moonlight pipes does just that, in a way that recalls the intricate, figural carvings of briar pipes from the turn of the 20th century. But Ondrej also departs from the figural approach of early briar pipes by combining it with high-grade materials and a careful attention to grain patterns that is far more modern.

As I have no wish to upset the search algorithms employed by today’s digital technologies, let’s just say that this Moonlight pipe has a clear ‘hunting’ theme to it, with the bowl resembling something like a wooden stock, and a genuine shell casing repurposed to collar its shank. Together these elements give the pipe, which would otherwise be a very traditional Hungarian/Oom Paul shape, a distinct aesthetic, and a very beautiful one at that. The briar used was clearly top-notch, with gorgeous bird’s-eye and cross-grain patterns around the bowl, as was the hand-cut ebonite used for the stem. The pipe also has a cavalier-esque cap at the bottom of the shank for easy cleaning of the pipe.
