Description

Michel pipes were store-brand pipes made for Maison Michel, a North Carolina (USA) tobacconist run by Michel J. Mitchell between 1951 and 1980. Over the years, several prominent pipe-makers made pipes for Maison Michel, such as Charatan, Barling, and others.

If you’ve been following my listings for an extended period of time, you’ll know that I’ve absolutely fallen in love with these new old stock Michel pipes, rescued from the Maison‘s inventory storage. This shape in particular, a lightweight author, or tomato, from the seemingly higher-end Selected line, is one I’ve grown especially fond of, but I can’t bring myself to keep one as they sell almost as quickly as I list them (don’t worry, I do have one Michel that I kept for my own rotation). I’m also fairly certain that the Select line was, at the very least in part, made for Michel by GBD. I’m sure I’ve seen this shape on GBDs in the past, just as with other Michel pipes and their GBD-brand siblings, but I can’t for the life of me remember the number. It’s not the 9646, but similar, with a round shank, rather than the oval shank of the 9646. If you do happen to know, please get in touch.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating.
