MBSD Meerschaum Silver Reverse Calabash Vase Sitter Block Meerschaum Pipe

The MBSD Meerschaum Silver is our new series of silver mounted meerschaum pipes. Using the same high-grade, fast-coloring Turkish meerschaum found on our Deluxe series, these pipes exclusively feature silver army mounts or spigot mounts.

Thanks to the recommendations of my new hire, I’ve been following developments in the Chinese artisan scene recently, and I’ve become quite enamored with their approach to “sitters,” i.e., self-standing pipe designs. Ping Zhan, for example, makes beautiful hybrid shape sitters, mixing elements of the cherrywood with the acorn or the Dublin. Zhang Guo Hui, a colleague and collaborator of Zhan’s, also makes really elegant sitters that almost look like ornate vases. So, as usual, I talked to my head carver in Eskişehir and asked him if he could bring something of these pipes to our meerschaums – with, of course, the stipulation that I always add when discussing the sources of new shapes: “Be inspired, but don’t copy.” This is one of the pipes that was the result of that inspiration. It’s more stripped-down than the Chinese style and it has a mixed finish of smooth and rusticated sections to keep things interesting, but nevertheless I’d say it’s a pretty faithful and respectful homage to this exciting Eastern movement in pipe design. This pipe also features a reverse calabash system, with an extra chamber inside the shank, to ensure an even cooler, drier smoke.
