Description
MBSD Meerschaum Masters is our line for special, typically figural, meerschaum pipes carved by some of today’s greatest living meerschaum carvers. For this pipe, we enlisted the services of Turkish master Karahan.
Eskişehir’s master Ayhan Karahan is well known not only for his skills as a meerschaum carver, but for his affinity for the Austrian schools of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Vienna was once a powerhouse of meerschaum carving, rivaling even Turkey in its elevation of the practice into a genuine art form. This particular pipe leans heavily into that tradition, taking as its motif the hunting dog (here a trusty Labrador retriever) that has graced meerschaum carvings for centuries. Alongside its highly detailed and intricate form, two beads of glass have been utilized for the dog’s eyes; at the other end of the bowl, a briar accent collars—if you’ll excuse the pun—the shank. Lastly, the pipe’s stem is cut from a distinctly amber-toned acrylic, to complete its embrace of the Vienna style.
