Description

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

Oftentimes, I send my carver in Türkiye catalogs or examples of briar pipes I’m fond of and ask him if he can create something similar in meerschaum, or at least something that captures the spirit and style of certain works. Other times, I simply tell him to create what he thinks would look good, as he is, of course, the master carver in this equation. This particular Deluxe is an instance of the latter, but I can’t help but feel as though the former is rubbing off on him. After all, it is a curious blend of elements from the traditional saddle billiard and Rhodesian shapes, with a little bit of stack added to the mix. It reminds me of something you might find in a 1950s Stanwell catalog, back in the days of post-war neo-classical hybrids and the like.
