Description
At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.
The cutty is one of the earliest briar pipe shapes, in part because early briar carvers transposed an already-familiar design found in clay tavern pipes onto the new medium. It then held its place as a familiar briar staple until modern hand made pipes and their adventurous designs eclipsed it, along with many other traditional shapes. But, more recently, the shape underwent a revival, not least due to the functionalist creations of Danish legend Tom Eltang, along with those inspired by him, such as his protege Mike Sebasian Bay and MBSD’s own Tristan Lefebvre. Nevertheless, it is not a shape that has ever been nearly as common in meerschaum, barring those century-and-older pieces that, like briars, took cues from clays. I wanted some Deluxe cutty shapes, so as ever, I asked my carver what he can do. There’s a little bit of briar tradition, a little of briar modernity, and a good dose of Turkish meerschaum artistry in this one’s composition, which I was particularly pleased with.
