While some meerschaum pipes come with clamshell cases, some pipe smokers don’t find much use for them. As our Deluxe meerschaums are all fitted with an extra durable, patented Briar-Mortise system, we considered this an opportunity to offer a pipe that instead comes with a complimentary protective sleeve, and to pass the savings onto our buyers. Some of you may be familiar with my recent efforts to bring shapes typically associated with briar pipes into the world of meerschaum. This one continues the collaboration with my carver that intended to bring Danish briar pipe styles to meerschaum. In particular, the key influence on this design was the way certain Danish carvers approached the bulldog and Rhodesian shapes, such as Sixten Ivarsson and Jess Chonowitsch, in pipes under their own names and as designers for Stanwell. Like those shapes, this one mixes elements of the traditional Rhodesian and the slightly more modern horn, keeping the former’s signature bi-conical bowl and beadlines, while introducing a gentle S-curve more typical to the latter.
