MBSD Masters by Kenan Magnum Lions Block Meerschaum Pipe, New
Out of stock
Description
MBSD Meerschaum Masters is our line for special, typically figural, meerschaum pipes carved by some of today’s greatest living meerschaum carvers. For this pipe, we enlisted the services of Turkish master Kenan.
I’ve said before that the closest classical art form to meerschaum carving is sculpture. Meerschaum carving is, after all, a form of subtractive sculpture. But there are other art forms that can be readily associated with meerschaum carving, including two-dimensional art forms such as painting. I mention this because this meerschaum pipe is of a scene that is also very common to painting, that being the ascendant lion. Meerschaum carvers have been using this motif in their work for centuries, as have sculptors outside of meerschaum, but so have painters, from primitive man to the artists of the Baroque period, such as Rembrandt or Rubens. It is a primal scene that recurs again and again in the human imagination, and this rendition by Turkish master Kenan, with its profound vitality and minute attention to detail, is a worthy entry into that ongoing tradition.
This is truly a one of a kind and weighing in at 1.4lbs. The case it’s being held by more resembles a briefcase than a pipe box.
