Mastro Geppetto Sandblasted Fluted Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description

Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do.

I’ve mentioned in previous listings how the Mastro Geppetto make gives Ser Jacopo’s carvers the opportunity to explore styles of pipes that simply do not fit in with the established Ser Jacopo aesthetic. I’ve also noted that a significant number of Mastro Geppetto pipes are made in the Anglo-French mold, in contrast to Ser Jacopo’s signature modern Italian one. On its face, this Mastro Geppetto would appear to be exactly that: a saddle billiard, just as might be found on a mid-century Comoy’s or GBD. Upon close inspection, however, it looks to be far more experimental. Aside from the mixed finish, the bowl bears a fascinating fluting of its sides. This combined with that partial sandblast gives it a decidedly time-worn appearance, much like the fumed stains seen on Castello’s Old Sea Rock pipes.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.
