Mastro Geppetto Liscia 2 Windshield Smooth Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly-technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do.
This is an Italian pipe, to be sure, made in an Italian workshop by Italian craftsmen. But, if you’re versed in the history of pipe design, you might recognize that this particular Geppetto has an important British precedent. That precedent would be the ‘windshield’ pipe patented by Alfred Dunhill, all the way back in 1905. As the term implies, the pipe is designed to mitigate the effects of the elements upon a smoker and to protect the pipe from overheating or rim damage, with the bowl’s forward wall being higher than the rear. As someone who often spends time in a windy climate, I can see myself making use of that, especially with a pipe as beautiful as this one.
This Geppetto came to us unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to further protect it during its first uses. It also comes with its original sleeve.
