American artisan Mark Tinsky first came to prominence as a pipe-maker during the late 1970s, when he and Curt Rollar founded the appropriately named American Pipe Smoking Co. Tinsky and Rollar’s partnership continued until 1990, when the pair split amicably, with Tinsky retaining ownership of the company. In the early 21st century, Mark Tinsky began to carve pipes under his own name, while continuing to use the American name for his expanded venture into pipe-making supplies for the next generation of master artisans.

The “Sunrise” is one of Mark Tinsky’s higher-end series, being a smooth polished finish in a light red and gold stain. As can be imagined – and seen here – this highlights the grain patterns underneath wonderfully, with this one’s bowl swirling with flame grain, and its rim covered in bird’s-eyes. While, as far as I know, Tinsky calls this shape his “Rhodesian,”I would also consider it to be a “bullmose,” which was a more common shape in the 20th century, thanks to makes like Custom-bilt in the United States, Peterson in Ireland, and GBD in England. It’s a stouter, chubbier Rhodesian-style shape, though perhaps interestingly, Tinsky’s rendition has a stem that is a little shorter than is typical even for the average bullmoose, which really drives home how muscular the stummel is.

The condition is excellent. This pipe came to us via our trade-in program, from a high-grade collector that I personally know takes great care of his pipes. He also made sure to include the pipe’s original sleeve, which will follow the pipe to its next proud owner.
