Description
L’Anatra pipes are made by the artisan duo Massimo Palazzi and Andrea Pascucci in northern Italy’s Pesaro region. Those with some familiarity with Italian pipes will likely recognize that particular region, as it is the home of what has come to be known as the “Pesaro School” of high-grade pipe making. Through its close network of artisans and workshops, Pesaro has been an epicenter for some of the finest pipes in Europe, including those of Mastro de Paja, Ser Jacopo, Le Nuvole, and—of course—L’Anatra.
As I’ve mentioned a few times before, the bean pot, or pignata, is a shape, or genre of shapes, with a special place in Italian pipe making, and in the pipe making of Pesaro in particular. Taking inspiration from earthenware used in cooking, these pots are highly distinctive, and a far cry from their Anglo-French counterparts. This one, from L’Anatra, not only features exquisite grain, but also a sterling silver army mount, alongside its sterling silver “duck” stem logo. It is graded two out of a possible three Uova d’Oro, or “golden eggs.”
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening. The pipe comes with its original sleeve.
