La Biota Large Morta Bent Egg w/ Horn Handmade Pipe, New

Description

A graduate of Italy’s prestigious Academia della Pipa, Michele Sottocasa has been making pipes for over a decade under the la Biota name. Prior to becoming a pipe-maker, Sottocasa trained and worked as a designer and art director, and la Biota pipes continue this drive towards a distinct aesthetic vision. The name, ‘la Biota,’ originally derives from ecology, and symbolizes the deep connection between humans and nature – a connection well represented by the hand-made tobacco pipe.

After having the pleasure of linking up with Michele again at this year’s Las Vegas International Pipe Show, and eventually managed to cajole him into letting me take some of the pipes he’d brought back for my customers. This one seemed to perfectly encapsulate the la Biota style. Its bowl is has been turned from millennia-old oak, known as morta, whose fossilized form is found in Europe’s wetlands; its shank has been carved from horn, harvested from Italy’s native deer population; and its stem is hand cut from mountain camouflage ebonite. I’d say it’s a perfect modern hunter’s pipe, but is equally well suited for prowls about the town.
