Description

Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.

The shape ’98B,’ Kaywoodie’s squat bulldog, was introduced in the 1947 catalog. The Relief Grain, on the other hand, was a staple in Kaywoodie production from 1936 all the way to the 1960s. It was Kaywoodie’s answer to the sandblasted finishes that rose to prominence in English pipe-making in the interwar period, and I’d say this particular Kaywoodie is a fitting response to those pipes. Like the early Barling’s Make pipes, or patent-era Dunhills, this Kaywoodie features excellent, ring grain sandblasting, with that same rugged, craggy texture found in the English greats.

The condition is very good. There’s some rim darkening, but I wouldn’t call it significant. The rest of the finish has held up well, and the vulcanite stem is without tooth abrasions. This pipe has Kaywoodie’s patented four-hole stinger.
