Kaywoodie Original XL Rusticated Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates

Description
Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
Debuting in the 1960s, the Original was Kaywoodie’s line of handmade, wholly individual pipes, whose bowls were turned freehand in styles not unlike those of Charatan or GBD’s Unique. Unlike their English counterparts, however, Kaywoodie’s Originals were also offered in rusticated finishes, such as this one’s intricate, leather-like texturing. These were by no means cheap pipes, being on the high end of Kaywoodie’s extensive range of grades and price-points. In fact, adjusted for inflation, the $50 one would have to spend to buy one in the late 1960s would be equivalent to around $450 today. It is no wonder, then, that the Original was one of the few lines offered by Kaywoodie with a lifetime servicing program.
The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening and some residual oxidation on the stem.
