Description
Kaywoodie pipes are as American as apple pie. Starting in 1919 as a pipe brand for KB&B, a pipe shop dating all the way back to 1851, Kaywoodie has since then been a staple of American-made pipes. In the present, many Kaywoodies are collectors’ items, in addition to being fantastic smokers.
Kaywoodie’s Natural Burl was a series introduced some time in the 1950s and 1960s, though back then, it did not have quite the same finish as the one seen here. The Original Natural Burl was deeply and jaggedly rusticated, mimicking the appearance of the outermost edge—known as plateaux—of briar root as found in the wild. At some point, this iteration was retired, and what emerged in its place was the finish seen here. Here we have a softer, finer rustication, closer resembling tree bark found on the branches of the tree briar is harvested from. There’s merits to both, depending on one’s personal preferences. I find this one to be more subtle, especially when paired with such a sleek Zulu shape as this one.
The condition is very good. Slight rim darkening and very minor handling marks.
