Description
Karl Erik was a Danish pipe-maker, and one of the originators of the Danish style of pipe-making that swept the world in the 20th century. He was a prolific carver and many who apprenticed in his workshop went on to become iconic pipe-makers in their own right, such as Peder Jeppesen and Bent Nielsen (Benner). Erik was also what might be called a pipe-maker’s pipe-maker, one admired not only by Danish pipe enthusiasts, but by other legends in his contemporary scene – so much so that, when Erik sadly passed in 2004, Tom Eltang bought Erik’s lathe to use in his own workshop.
From what I’ve seen, the Royal Court series from Karl Erik was one of more traditional shapes than the average “Danish” pipe, but with a few stylistic additions to keep the design fresh. This one, for example, combines elements of the brandy, Lovat, and saddle billiard shapes to create something distinct, but subtle about it, and is in many ways a precursor to more contemporary pipes from Danish-inspired artisans, such as Adam Davidson or Scott Klein.
The condition is good. There’s some noticeable rim darkening, a couple of minor scrapes on the outer rim, and a little bit of tooth chatter, but it’s got plenty of life (and looks) in it yet.
