Karl Erik 2 Partially Rusticated Bent Volcano Estate Briar Pipe [SOLD OUT]
Out of stock
Description
Karl Erik was a Danish pipe-maker, and one of the originators of the Danish style of pipe-making that swept the world in the 20th century. He was a prolific carver and many who apprenticed in his workshop went on to become iconic pipe-makers in their own right, such as Peder Jeppesen and Bent Nielsen (Benner). Erik was also what might be called a pipe-maker’s pipe-maker, one admired not only by Danish pipe enthusiasts, but by other legends in his contemporary scene – so much so that, when Erik sadly passed in 2004, Tom Eltang bought Erik’s lathe to use in his own workshop.
This Karl Erik could be called a brandy, as we have done here, but it could also be called a volcano, or even a kind of Ukulele, much like those made by Erik’s contemporary Sixten Ivarsson. It’s a distinctly Danish design that blends familiar shapes into something quite new. Though the general finish is smooth polished, it has a long patch of rustication on the underside, in a way that almost makes it look like the briar is opening up to reveal the veiny growths of wood within.
The condition of the pipe is very good for its age. There are some handling marks around the bowl and a little unevenness to the button, but that’s about it.
