Description

Karim Pipes are made by Abdul Karim, an artisan pipe-maker based in Tangerang, Indonesia. A pipe-maker since 2016, Karim is part of an emerging 21st century movement of Indonesian artisan carvers, including Wandi Riyadi, Deden Hendan Durahman of Caxra Pipes, Karim’s mentor, Edy Bima, and Karim’s mentee, Bennie Joe, whose pipes MBSD has also sold. Karim carves most of his pipes freehand, and is often inspired by wildlife, leading to the creation of figural and organically styled designs. Karim also produces more traditional shapes with distinct inflections of his own choosing, such as his popular calabash pipes.

One of my favorite things about the Rhodesian is the sheer variety of designs to have come out of what is, really, a very traditional shape with comparatively strict properties. This particular Rhodesian, from Karim, follows one contemporary trend in Rhodesian design through its decidedly squat figure. This, coupled with the pipe’s ebonite mount and flared cumberland, gives it something of a Danish feel, without abandoning the Rhodesian’s Anglo-French conventions entirely. This pipe also features a mixed finish, including Karim’s signature rustication on the pipe’s underside and a simple, walnut stain on the rim, allowing for the expression of plenty of enjoyable grain patterns.
