Hungarian-Canadian artisan Julius Vesz carved his first pipe all the way back in 1959, and continues making pipes today in the 2020s. With 60 years of experience in the craft, he is recognized as one of the most seasoned and skilled pipe-makers around, counting among his admirers luminaries such as Richard Carleton Hacker, who remarked upon the ‘rare elegance’ inherent to Vesz’s work.

The Hand Cut series is one that employs Julius Vesz’s oldest, most well-seasoned stock of briar blocks, hand turned into designs that are all unique. This one, for example, is somewhat like a Lovat, with a round shank and saddle stem, but the stem features a gentle bend, while the bowl is broader at its base than is typical, bringing it close to a brandy shape. The pipe looks to be dressed in Vesz’s Oxblood finish, which I’ve always found to be particularly striking, without being too vibrant.

The condition is excellent. There’s a small amount of darkening on the inner lip of the rim, but nothing major. There are two of what appears to be small, natural briar imperfections at the back of the bowl, but again, nothing especially significant.
